Sunol Research Group

The physics of soft, complex, and living matter.

Computational models for discovery, prediction, design, and control.

Four research areas: cellular biophysics, colloidal self-assembly, viscoelastic flows, and constitutive-law discovery.
Representative problems across systems and scales.

Research vision

Our group seeks to discover and harness the governing physics of soft matter, complex fluids, and biological systems. We combine first-principles modeling, differentiable simulation, and machine learning to build predictive models across scales that close the loop between experiment and theory. Across problems ranging from biological transport to flow and processing in advanced manufacturing, these physics-based digital twins unify discovery, inverse design, and control to advance materials and technologies for human health and sustainability.
